Garbrandt: Eyeing Return at MSG

Cody Garbrandt had arguably one of the biggest wins in 2016, defeating Dominick Cruz to win the UFC Bantamweight Championship on Dec. 30, 2016, at UFC 207. It was Cruz’s first loss in about a decade.

But since then, Garbrandt has been hampered by injuries and has not made a title defense. Garbrandt was originally scheduled to defend the title against TJ Dillashaw at UFC 213 last month, but a back injury halted those plans.

Rumors swirled a bit that the two could meet at UFC 216 in October, but Garbrandt feels he may not be ready by then. And he has one event on his mind — UFC 217, which takes place one month later at Madison Square Garden.

“I want MSG” Garbrandt said.

UFC President Dana White reportedly sent Garbrandt to Germany for a stem cell injection back in May, but the trick did not help Garbrandt’s recovery time.

However, since then, Garbrandt has recovered quite a bit.

“Feeling a lot better,” Garbrandt said. “Hardly doing MMA. It’s been all rehab and strength and conditioning. I can’t wait to get back.”

Garbrandt and Dillashaw were teammates at Team Alpha Male before Dillashaw left the camp in late 2015.
