Garbrandt: I Broke Dominick Cruz
Although Cody Garbrandt was quick to call for a superfight with featherweight champion Jose Aldo after beating Dominick Cruz for the bantamweight title at UFC 207, ‘No Love’ says he was more than willing to accept a rematch with ‘The Dominator’.
Garbrandt, who is the only man to beat Cruz under the UFC banner, says he was surprised that the former champion didn’t campaign for an instant rematch.
“I was very surprised with Dominick, all the sh*t talking he did,” Garbrandt said at a recent media day for TUF 25. “What he said he was gonna do to me, he wasn’t able to do that, so I was just waiting for him to get the rematch. Give him the rematch, give him the respect for being the most dominant bantamweight fighter in the world. If I talked a lot of sh*t and kid comes and beats me up like that, I’d at least try again, because I have a fighter heart.”
The 25-year-old UFC sensation battered Cruz over the course of five rounds at Las Vegas’s T-Mobile Arena and thinks the beating may have ‘broke’ Cruz for good.
“I feel like Dominick doesn’t [have a fighter’s heart],” Garbrandt said. “I think I broke Dominick in that fight and truly don’t think Dominick will be the same.”
There has been no news on Cruz’ next opponent, but it’s expected that the Alliance MMA representative will rebound against a top-five ranked bantamweight.
Garbrandt will defend his 135-pound title against former teammate and friend T.J. Dillashaw, who he coaches against on the latest series of The Ultimate Fighter. The Team Alpha Male product said Dillashaw’s true character will be exposed on TUF and went on to compare him to Cruz.
“That’s fine,” Garbrandt said about fighting Dillashaw. “I’m very content with fighting T.J. I’m happy to fight T.J. T.J.’s not a good person. He’s not a good person. He’s kind of a generic version of Dominick Cruz.”
No date or venue has been announced for Garbrandt vs. Dillashaw, but the bout is expected to take place in the second half of 2017.
