Garcia: Arum Won’t Let Loma Fight Me
Mikey Garcia’s feud with Bob Arum may be what stands in the way of the biggest fight of his career, as the undefeated boxer thinks Arum will block a fight with Vasyl Lomachenko.
In an interview with ESPN Deportes, the WBC/IBF lightweight champion says he won’t waste his time persuing a fight against Lomachenko, as he feels his past legal issues with Arum (a 2014 parting of the ways and lawsuit that lasted until 2016) and Garcia being a Showtime fighter and Lomachenko an ESPN fighter, will stand in the way from it ever happening.
With those issues standing in the way, Garcia is looking at his “option A,” a fight with IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr.
“Yes there is option B [Lomachenko], but things may get complicated,” Garcia told ESPN Deportes.
I”‘m interested in Lomachenko, and at lightweight there is no other opponent more attractive than him, but I have not heard Bob Arum say they want to fight with me. Bob is not going to allow this fight, and why should I waste my time. But if they are interested, let them talk to me.”
Garcia has embraced the idea of facing Spence, even though he’d be moving up two weight classes.
“He beat Brook, Lamont Peterson. He has technique, defense, stature, he’s left-handed, strong, dangerous, he’s a young champion.. maybe he does not have the trajectory but he has the qualities,” Garcia said.
