Garcia Feels He Needs To “Earn” Manny Fight
While there is no doubting Mikey Garcia’s resume up until this point, the former multi-division world champion knows he is not among the elite at welterweight… yet.
Coming off of his 2019 loss to Errol Spence Jr inside AT&T Stadium, Garcia returns to the ring in February against fellow former world champion Jessie Vargas inside The Star in Frisco, Texas.
Looking to settle in at 147-pounds, Garcia will fight at the weight class for the second time in his career, moving up two weight classes for his fight with Spence.
Vargas, who has only suffered pro losses to Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao, can put up the type of fight he needs to prove he belongs in the ring with Pacquiao later this year.
“I would love that fight. I think the fans would really enjoy a fight like that as well. But I gotta to earn it, I have to get something behind that as well. If that fight is available, then I’m definitely going to jump on the opportunity,” Garcia told BoxingScene.com.
“I just can’t be waiting and waiting and waiting, I gotta get in the ring. If that match is presented to me, I will try to push as hard as I can to secure that fight.”
Garcia joins an ever-expanding list of welterweights who Pacquiao can fight when he returns to the ring later this year.
