Garcia Gains Fourth Division World Title

Mikey Garcia has made boxing history with his fourth division world title win, defeating Sergey Lipinets via unanimous decision to capture the IBF Junior Welterweight Title.

This win means Garcia joins Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez as the only boxers in history to win titles at 126, 130, 135 and 140.

The opening round was not the most exciting one, with Garcia doing most of the offensive work and Lipinets showing strong defense. Garcia managed to get to Lipinets in the second, finding openings as the champion bent over during his punches. The champion managed to catch Garcia early in the third, but Garcia answered back with a flurry, taking control with stronger and crisper punches in the round.

Lipinets started to gain some momentum in the fourth round, but the challenger won the second half of the round with heavier leather. Lipinets, however, began to cut off the ring in the fifth, applying pressure and forcing Garcia’s back to the ropes.

After a split sixth round where both fighters had their moments, Garcia managed to land a counter left hook midway through the seventh that knocked Lipinets down for the first time in his career and turned the fight’s tide.

Lipinets got back onto the offense in the eighth, but Garcia still waited in the wings for his opportunity. Lipinets threw some of his best stuff in the 9th and 10th rounds, but Garcia was able to answer back each time. Lipinets and Garcia fired away in the championship rounds until the final bell, with Garcia getting a bloody nose and mouth in the process.

All three judges awarded the bout and title to Garcia with scores of 116-111, 117-110, 117-110.
