Premier Boxing Champions has announced that undefeated welterweight champion Danny "Swift" Garcia will be headlining a Nov. 12 card at Temple University’s Liacouras Center in Philadelphia. Garcia held a press conference Thursday to officially announce a non-title fight vs. Samuel Vargas.
Garcia is expected to face fellow undefeated champion Keith Thurman in the first quarter of 2017, but will first look to put on a strong showing against Vargas. The event will be aired by Premier Boxing Champions on Spike on Nov. 12.
"My dad and I wanted to get one more fight in before the end of the year and there was no doubt in my mind it had to be in Philadelphia," said Garcia. "My team got it done and it’s a great feeling to fight at home over the holidays. I’m excited to use this opportunity to give back to the community and put on a show on November 12. This city means everything to me. I hope everyone comes out, but shows up with cans of food too. I’m gearing up for a big fight with Keith Thurman next year that’s going to be a can’t miss event. First, I’m going to fight for my city on November 12."
At the press conference, Garcia also announced he will be partnering with Philabundance, Philadelphia’s largest hunger relief organization, to arrange a regional food drive, collecting most-needed items, such as tuna and vegetables. Canned goods can be dropped off at the Liacouras Center where the fight will be held, and a portion of the ticket sales will go to the charity as well.
The event’s undercard was also announced at the press conference, with its fighters in attendance: undefeated prospects Jarrett Hurd and Omar Douglas, and local prospects Thomas Velasquez, Jeffrey Torres, Kyrone Davis, Milton Santiago and Antonio Dubose.
