Garcia-Vargas Winner To Receive WBC Diamond Belt
When Jessie Vargas and Mikey Garcia face off in the ring on February 29, the idea would be the winner would be the next big challenger for a welterweight title. Garcia himself has expressed that desire. While there won’t be a true title on the line in their fight, there will be a small incentive.
The World Boxing Council Board of Governors decided to award the winner of the bout the Diamond Belt. In a press release, the WBC announced a unanimous vote was made to up the ante.
This is not the first time the WBC Diamond belt was introduced to the public. Floyd Mayweather, Manny Pacquiao, Bernard Hopkins and Canelo Alvarez have all held the belt at one point or another. Special fights, whether without any titles or just to honor boxings best, have resulted in the belt being brought out.
Garcia (39-1) is coming off of a unanimous decision loss against Errol Spence Jr. back in May for the IBF Welterweight Title. The 32-year-old has held IBF and WBC Lightweight Titles. Vargas (29-2-2) last fought in April, beating Humberto Soto via TKO. The former WBO Welterweight Champion is 2-0-2 in his last four fights.
Live on DAZN and Sky Sports, the fight between Garcia and Vargas takes place inside the Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas.
