Garcia vs. Porter To Headline Showtime Card In September
The long-awaited WBC welterweight title fight between Danny Garcia and Shawn Porter looks to finally take place in early September.
A report from RingTV says the fight is all but set to headline a Showtime Championship Boxing card at the Barclays Center on September 8. The card will also likely feature a WBC super middleweight title fight between David Benavidez and Anthony Dirrell, according to another report from the publication.
The television card will also feature a heavyweight fight between contender Adam Kownacki and former IBF world champion Charles Martin.
Garcia and Porter, both mandatory challengers to the now-vacant WBC title, had been feuding all year long, with the two fighters planned to fight late last year in a title eliminator. The fight never materialized, but after Garcia won a title eliminator back in February, the WBC wanted to have the two fight for an interim title.
Once Keith Thurman vacated the WBC title he won from Garcia last year due to him not defending the belt once due to elbow surgery, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman ordered Garcia and Porter to fight for the vacant title.
According to RingTV, the September 8 Showtime card will also run opposite an HBO Boxing card, the third iteration of HBO’s “Superfly” series.
