Gary Russell Jr To Make Sixth Title Defense Against Mark Magsayo
Mark Magsayo is getting the title shot he called for.
Magsayo (23-0, 16 KOs) is set to face WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr (31-1, 18 KOs) on January 22 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The two will be headlining the event.
Russell will be making his sixth title defense, which he first captured in 2015 with a TKO over Jhonny Gonzalez.
“My opponent is one of Manny Pacquiao’s fighters, who is a legend in the sport and I’m pretty sure has a good eye for talent,” Russell said in a statement.
“I’m sure he signed Magsayo for a reason. I know that I’m facing a guy who’s willing to put it all on the line, with everything to gain and nothing to lose.”
Magsayo, meanwhile, is coming off of a brutal knockout of Julio Ceja on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao vs. Yordenis Ugas on August 21.
“I am going to come to win and to make the most of this chance. There is a reason Gary is a champion, just like there is a reason I became the mandatory challenger,” Magsayo said in a statement.
“This is going to be a great fight for me to show the world what Filipinos are made of.”
