Gennady Golovkin Sends Grim Warning To Oscar De La Hoya
Gennady Golovkin hasn’t taken too kindly to Oscar De La Hoya’s callout.
De La Hoya is planning to make a comeback in the world of boxing. Despite his success with Golden Boy Promotions, De La Hoya has got the itch to throw leather again. The former world champion isn’t talking about exhibition matches either. He’s gunning for Golovkin, who he claims would be an “easy” fight for him.
Golovkin is well aware of that comment and he has made a dark prediction if he were to share the ring with “The Golden Boy.” Here’s what Golovkin told AFP through a translator (via Yahoo! Sports).
“You know Oscar, you know how dirty his mouth is. Everything involving Gennady Golovkin for him is a nightmare. He can say whatever. But let me put it this way – If I got an opportunity to legally kill a person in the ring, I might seize it.”
For many, these comments seem out of character for Golovkin, who is known for being calm, cool, and collected. Still, “GGG” is clearly not holding his tongue on De La Hoya’s comeback journey. There have been reports swirling about a potential clash between De La Hoya and Marcos Maidana but nothing is official on that end.
As for Golovkin, he’s set for an IBF and IBO Middleweight Title defense. He will defend his gold against Kamil Szeremeta on Friday night, December 18. That’s just one night before his rival, Canelo Alvarez, returns to take on Callum Smith for the WBA (Super) and WBC Super-Middleweight Titles.
