Gennady Golovkin vs. Ryota Murata Possibly On The Horizon

The boxing world could close out 2021 with a bang as Gennady Golovkin vs. Ryota Murata is reportedly being discussed.

Dan Rafael of World Boxing News reports that Golovkin’s team has reached out to Teiken Promotions and DAZN in hopes of booking the fight. Golovkin is the IBF and IBO Middleweight Champion. Murata lays claim to the WBA gold.

Rafael’s sources say that talks are in place for the title bout to be held in Japan on New Year’s Eve. Combat sports is usually alive and well on Dec. 31 every year in Japan. Fight fans who don’t want to wait that long may be in luck as a potential summer fight is also being discussed.

Another possibility is for Golovkin and Murata to share a card in separate bouts months before their showdown. If that were to happen, the ideal timing would be late August or early September.

Golovkin was last seen in action back in December 2020. He successfully defended his IBF and IBO gold against Kamil Szeremeta. “GGG” surpassed Bernard Hopkins for the most successful middleweight title defenses at 21.

Murata hasn’t fought since late 2019. He successfully defended his WBA Middleweight Title against Steven Butler, scoring a fifth-round TKO victory.
