Gerry Cooney Recalls The Legendary Larry Holmes Fight
Larry Holmes and Gerry Cooney are currently on tour in the UK.
The reason behind their tour is to celebrate the famous fight they had in June 1982 in Las Vegas. That fight is considered one of the greatest fights in Las Vegas history.
At that time, Cooney had already established himself as one of the biggest names in boxing history. On the other hand, Holmes was criminally underrated by many boxing experts.
Considering there was an age gap of eight years between the two, many predicted Cooney to clinch victory.
However, the fights are not fought on paper, they are fought in the ring. Holmes did the impossible and stopped the American boxer in the 13th.
After this defeat, Cooney’s career went down.
“I believe we should have got a rematch. If the fight had taken place in 2022, we would have fought at least thrice. The quality of the fight was unbelievable. We both had chances. I was struggling to execute some of the things. However, I learned a lot that night from such a great champion,” Cooney said.
“I would have loved to go back to the drawing board and be motivated again to tackle him. However, I had two managers in my corner who I couldn’t stand. I had no one in my corner,” Cooney concluded.
