Gervonta Davis Speaks On Lomachenko vs. Lopez, Spence vs. Garcia
Gervonta Davis has shared his thoughts on two pivotal title fights.
The highly-anticipated lightweight title unification bout between WBA (Super) and WBO Champion Vasiliy Lomachenko and IBF Champion Teofimo Lopez will take place on October 17. The title showdown between WBC and IBF Welterweight Champion Errol Spence Jr. and Danny Garcia will commence on November 21. Both title bouts are expected to draw high interest in what has been considered a down year for boxing due to COVID-19.
Speaking to Brian Custer on The Last Stand Podcast, Davis gave his take on Lomachenko vs. Lopez (via Boxing Scene).
“Teofimo has the youth. He’s strong and he has skills. Loma is just a veteran. It depends on if Teofimo seizes his moment coming up to the ring like he doesn’t care. If he’s a little shaky or questions himself, then I give it to Loma. If he comes up like ‘I’m the man,’ then we have a problem on our hands.”
He went on to discuss Spence vs. Garcia and why he feels it’ll be down to the wire.
“That’s a tough fight for both. Errol has the skills and technique, Danny has the timing. He knows how to wait for that perfect moment. I’m excited and ready to watch it. I’m going to be on the edge of my chair. It’s going to be another great fight for the sport. I’m close with Errol, and Danny gave me an opportunity to spar with him before when I was coming up and he was fighting Zab Judah. He gave me an opportunity, and I am thankful for that. It’s a 50-50 fight for me.”
Davis has his own title fight coming up on October 24. He’ll put his WBA (Regular) Lightweight Title on the line against Leo Santa Cruz. Davis will also be fighting for Cruz’s WBA (Super) Super-Featherweight gold.
