Gervonta Davis Stops Hector Garcia With Dynamic Power Punching

Gervonta “Tank” Davis has added yet another highlight to his reel, this time with a stoppage over Dominican tactician, and super featherweight titleholder, Hector Luis Garcia.

Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd inside the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, Davis outdid himself by landing an astonishing 53% of his attempted power punches over 8 rounds, the last of which removed Garcia from reality and forced him into a state in which he was unable to continue.

Throughout the first six rounds, both Davis and Garcia landed a good share of offensive output. Additionally, Garcia did an excellent job at battling inside the pocket, which is an extremely dangerous position to fight versus “Tank”. But ultimately, the tides turned once they entered the seventh round.

Though things at this point still seemed competitive, Davis remained comfortable and did not seem threatened by anything that he had faced so far, and was clearly just waiting for the right opportunity. Both fighters had their moments in the seventh, but the major takeaway was the three consecutive power shots that Davis landed that brought the fans to their feet as the round came to a close.

The eighth round saw a couple of interesting moments, the first of which was an altercation in the crowd involving rapper Meek Mill that caused absolute chaos, so much so that the fight was paused briefly. Once the action continued, Davis landed a nasty body shot followed by a hook up high that seemed to sting his opponent. Garcia’s chin held up as he continued to fight on the inside, not allowing Davis to wind up fully with the power shots he was delivering.

As they approached the end up the round, Davis landed a monstrous left hook that almost dropped Garcia. This hook was followed up by a right uppercut and an additional left. The bell rang to end the round, and it seemed that Garcia had escaped, but it was clear he was not all there as he attempted to walk toward’s Davis’s corner instead of his own.

Garcia still seemed fully dazed as the timer started for the ninth round, but no more punches would be thrown as the referee would wave off the fight upon the request of Garcia’s corner.

Garcia explained in his post fight interview that the last of the left hooks from Davis rattled him so hard that he temporarily lost vision in his right eye, and this is what forced him to retire for the evening.

Official Result: Gervonta Davis def. Hector Luis Garcia via TKO (Corner Stoppage) – Round 9, 0:13
