GGG Talks With Promoter, Taking Time Off
Less than two weeks after the first loss of his career, Gennady Golovkin spoke with his promoter Tom Loeffler on Tuesday to discuss what’s next for the former middleweight champion.
Golovkin would suffer a majority decision loss to Canelo Alvarez on September 15th, losing his WBC, IBO, and WBA middleweight titles, and speaking with Boxing Scene, Loeffler claims Golovkin is taking time for reflection.
“He’s just taking some time off, reflecting on everything. He hasn’t said when he wants to fight again. He’s still very disappointed with the decision, as we all are,” Loeffler told BoxingScene.com on Tuesday.
Loeffler stated that in his opinion, “I don’t think he’s going to fight(again) this year.”
When asked about a trilogy fight with Alvarez, Loffeler believes “that’s the biggest fight still in boxing. So, I think that would be everyone’s priority, to see when a third fight can be made.”
“Fans are the lifeblood of the sport and they were very unhappy with the decision, so they would want to see a third fight There was more outcry over this fight over the first fight because this is the fight that actually took his titles away.”
“The fans, you see them on social media, they all believe Gennady won the fight or at worst should’ve kept his titles,” said Loeffler.
