GGG vs. Szeremeta Targeted for March 28
The first title defense for Gennadiy Golovkin in his second reign as a middleweight world champion is currently in the works.
Per a report from ESPN’s Dan Rafael, a title bout between GGG, the IBF champion, and mandatory challenger Kamil Szeremeta is being planned for March 28 at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
Golovkin’s 2019 was spent attempting to rebound from suffering the first loss of his professional career in the September 2018 rematch with Canelo Alvarez. After defeating Steve Rolls in a June super middleweight contest, GGG took on Sergiy Derevyanchenko for the IBF title that had recently been stripped from Alvarez.
GGG defeated Derevyanchenko by decision in their October bout at New York’s Madison Square Garden but it wasn’t without controversy, with many feeling Golovkin was beginning to show his age in the fight.
Szeremeta is undefeated at 21-0 but only has five knockouts to his credit. He also last competed at MSG in October, finishing Oscar Cortes on the undercard.
