Gilberto Ramirez On His Future Following Benavidez Fight

WBA and WBO cruiserweight champion Gilberto Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs) revealed that his boxing career could conclude in as few as two fights, regardless of the outcome of his May 2 clash with David Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs).

As he prepares to defend his titles, the 33-year-old Mexican admitted he is shifting his focus from extending his career to closing it out on a high. Ramirez suggested that the Benavidez fight, followed by a potential unification with IBF champion Jai Opetaia, would serve as the ideal “victory lap” for his 17-year career. Having already become Mexico’s first-ever cruiserweight champion and a two-division titleholder, Ramirez noted that he no longer feels the need to prove his worth to the critics. Despite his retirement talk, “Zurdo” teased a move to the heavyweight division.

“I think maybe one or two more fights. I’ve been in this sport a long time. I will beat him. That’s my plan too, to fight Opetaia. Why not? It would be amazing [to fight at heavyweight],” Ramirez said
