Giovanni Marquez Notches Win In Pro Debut
Giovanni Marquez had a successful professional boxing debut.
Marquez nabbed his first victory as a pro against Nelson Morales via unanimous decision after a four-round bout. The scores were 40-36, 39-37 and 39-37.
“I felt great,” Marquez told Boxing Scene. “I hurt my left hand in the second round on a jab. I think I would have been able to stop him if I hadn’t hurt my hand.”
His father, trainer and former world champion Raul Marquez was leading his son from his corner. Marquez controlled the bout with his jabs, upper cuts and speed and efficiency.
Marquez landed 30 percent of his total punches compared to Morales’ 21 percent.
The 21-year-old Marquez said he started a little slow, but once he got into it, he relaxed and felt comfortable, calling it a “great” experience.
Meanwhile, Morales, 30, thought he did OK. He credited Marquez for applying good pressure and cutting the ring off.
