GLORY 46 Recap

GLORY became the first combat sports promotion to host an event in mainland China today, as GLORY 46 took place from Guangzhou Gymnasium in Gunagzhou, China.

Things got started with the SuperFight Series portion of the card, which featured a much anticipated headline bout, as GLORY Heavyweight Champion Rico Verhoeven defeated UFC veteran Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, who made his kickboxing debut. As expected by most in the kickboxing and MMA communities, Verhoeven dominated the fight. While Silva lasted through the first round, his performance looked sloppy, and he looked as if he was tempted to perform a takedown, which is illegal in kickboxing. Verhoeven, meanwhile, worked over Silva’s legs and ended up knocking “Bigfoot” down early on in the second with a high kick. Silva stood up but was rocked by a Verhoeven combination, forcing the ref to stop the bout.

But the spotlight of the card seemed to go to Alex Pereira, who scored an upset unanimous decision victory over Simon Marcus in the main event to win the GLORY Middleweight Championship. The opening round was fairly close, with both fighters seemingly holding back, though Marcus landed some strong body kicks.

But early on in the second, Pereira rocked the defending champion and knocked him down with an overhead right. Marcus got back up, but was forced back into a corner from the forward pressure by Pereira. Marcus relied on his Muay Thai late in the round, moving around the ring to try and get his footing back.

After the knockdown, Marcus had no answers for the challenger. Marcus tried to connect with overhead punches, relying on his boxing, but Pereira constantly able to dodge and land his own overhead shots

Pereira didn’t even stop at the start of the fifth, coming out aggressively with a flying knee and high kick, stunning Marcus. Pereira used a lot of energy in the first half of the round. Pereira looked tired and Marcus attempted to fire away to finish the round as strong as possible, but by that point, it was too little, too late.

Following the bout, it was announced that a rematch between Pereira and Yousri Belgaroui was being targeted for the GLORY: Redemption pay-per-view this December.

GLORY 46 also featured a featherweight tournament won by China’s own Chenglong Zhang, who ousted Masaya Kubo in the finals with a unanimous decision win. Zhang also scored a unanimous decision in his semifinal bout against Quade Taranaki. Though he fell just short, Kubo advanced to the final with a highlight first-round knockout over China’s Chenchen Li.

As a result of his tournament win, Zhang will compete in the featherweight contender’s tournament in two weeks at GLORY 47 in Lyon, France.
