GLORY 46: Rico Returns vs. ‘Bigfoot’

GLORY Kickboxing makes its debut in China this Saturday, and the promotion is bringing its most recognizable face: heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven.

Though Verhoeven (51-10, 14 KOs) already has a title defense scheduled for later this year, he will be competing on the GLORY 46: Superfight Series card in a very interesting matchup; he will take on former UFC staple Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva, who is making his kickboxing debut.

Silva, a veteran of thirty-plus MMA bouts, is confident that his striking skills will translate to the ring. But he has an insanely tall task ahead of him against Verhoeven, one of kickboxing’s most decorated and dangerous champions.

Though Silva may not have pro kickboxing experience, Verhoeven is not taking his opponent lightly.

“Bigfoot comes from a karate background so he has the standup,” Verhoeven said. “For me it doesn’t really matter actually. My style is gonna be the same.”

Dubbed ‘The King of Kickboxing’, Verhoeven will look to put on a show for the Chinese fans and most importantly stay healthy. He is scheduled to return to the ring on December 9th in Rotterdam, where he will defend his GLORY heavyweight title against Jamal Ben Saddik (32-5, 26 KOs).

Verhoeven vs. Ben Saddik is a full-fledged super-fight, as the rivalry between the two heavyweights stems back to 2011. The two fought in March of that year, and Ben Saddik became one of the few men to defeat Verhoeven, finishing him by TKO in the second round.

Before he has the chance to get his revenge against Ben Saddik, he will look to make short work of ‘Bigfoot’ and remind the GLORY fanbase that he remains king.

Following the event, be sure to come back to FIGHT SPORTS for further coverage leading up to Verhoeven vs. Ben Saddik at GLORY: Redemption on December 9.
