GLORY 47: Vakhitov Victorious Over Machado

Artem Vakhitov was successful in his return to the GLORY ring, scoring a decision win over Ariel Machado to retain the GLORY Light Heavyweight Title at GLORY 47 at the Palais des Sports de Gerland in Lyon, France.

Vakhitov was tested against a southpaw, but he seemed to do well. During one late exchange in the opening round, Vakhitov forced Machado to retreat against the ropes, where he fired a flurry of blows. Despite Vakhitov landing cleaner, Machado still brought his fair share of kicks and power shots.

A little over a minute into the second, Vakhitov dropped Machado with a high left kick. Though Machado got up almost right away, he was still clearly rocked and was forced against the ropes by the champion. Vakhitov was picking apart Machado, using his footwork smartly and finding openings.

Machado attempted to utilize his low kicks throughout the third round, trying to lessen the weapons Vakhitov has. But Machado was nearly knocked down yet again  late in the round, as in the final seconds, Vakhitov went off and threw a flurry, a mix of punches and kicks, that could have forced the ref to step in if it weren’t for the bell.

Round four was Machado’s best round, as he landed a number of sweeps and showing off durability. But Machado was clearly tired, and there was no power behind any of his strikes or techniques. By the fifth round, Machado was completely exhausted, and while he lasted to the bell, it wasn’t enough. Vakhitov scored the unanimous decision — with one judge giving him the win 49-45, while the other four scoring the bout 50-44.

Anvar Boynazarov and Abdellah Ezbiri competed in the finals of a featherweight contender’s tournament held at the event. Boynazarov advanced with a second-round knockout over Fabio Pinca, while Ezbiri earned his final spot with a decision over Azize Hlali. Ezbiri scored a decision win in the final, winning the tournament and a future GLORY Featherweight Title shot.

Former GLORY Welterweight Champion and France native Cedric Doumbe also was in action tonight, competing in a co-featured bout against fellow Frenchman Yohan Lidon. Doumbe showed complete dominance, sweeping the judges’ scorecards.
