GLORY 70: Groenhart Claims Interim Gold

Murthel Groenhart lost the opportunity to challenge rival and welterweight champion Cedric Doumbe in Lyon, France due to injury, but he claimed a chance to fight him again and interim gold, as he defeated Troy Jones in the main event of GLORY 70.

Jones attempted to establish his jab early on while mixing in low kicks, while Groenhart threw all his power early on with combinations but didn’t connect with much. In fact, all five judges gave Jones the first round on the scorecards.

That’s all the success the American would be able to achieve in this fight, however. Jones was holding his own again in round two when Groenhart caught him with a powerful right hand that dropped him. Jones got up but Groenhart swarmed him with knees and punches aplenty, dropping Jones again and knocking him out to give Groenhart the win and interim title.

After the fight, Groenhart gave a warning message to Doumbe and told the French crowd to not “go too hard” on Doumbe after he defeats him.
