Goeido Closing In On Championship

After 12 days at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament, Goiedo remains undefeated and is nearing his first championship victory. On Thursday the ozeki defeated  yokozuna Kakuryu.

Goiedo is two wins ahead of several competitors: Yokozuna Harumafuji, sekiwake Takayasu and rank-and-file grappler Endo. Ozeki Kisenosato and No. 6 maegashira Tamawashi are trailing with 9-3 records in the Tournament.

The 15-day tournament has three days left before a winner is crowned. Goiedo is well on his way to capturing that monumental first Autumn Grand victory. He defeated Kakuryu in Thursday’s final competition, persevered through the Mongolian’s attacks before finally shoving Kakuryu out of bounds and securing the win.

It was the twelfth time Goiedo had defeated Kakuryu and the 36th time they have faced one another.
