Golden Boy Signs Jezreel Corrales
One of the top fighters in the increasingly crowded 130 lb. division has signed with one of the top boxing promotions. WBA super featherweight champion Jezreel Corrales has signed with Golden Boy Promotions, according to a press release this week.
Corrales (21-1) signed a multi-fight deal with the promotion.
"First of all, I would like to thank God for allowing these doors to keep opening up for me," said Corrales. "I would also like to thank Golden Boy Promotions for giving me the opportunity to become a part of their huge company and for giving me the chance to showcase my skills in the U.S. market and being able to perform on the big stage and participate in the huge events that they put together. With their hand, I will be the best super featherweight champion in the world."
"We know that Corrales has a huge opportunity to impress boxing fans here in the U.S, and we have no doubt that he will attain his goal as one of the best super featherweights in the world," said Golden Boy’s Oscar De La Hoya. "We look forward to seeing him showcase his talent here, and taking on the best in his class."
Corrales rose to the top of the 130 lb. division in surprising fashion. In April of last year, he went to Japan to take on dominant champion Takashi Uchiyama in a fight that many believed the hometown champion would win. Instead, Corrales shocked the world, knocking out Uchiyama in the second round. At the end of 2016 Corrales proved that he was here to stay as a champion when he defeated Uchiyama by split decision in their rematch.
In a division that has been under the spotlight recently because of the success of WBO champ Vasyl Lomachenko, Corrales will look to get some high-profile fights in 2017 now that he has signed with Golden Boy.
