Golovkin Eyes Two Options For MSG Return
Gennady Golovkin’s return to the ring is being set for a June 8th return to Madison Square Garden. And while the former unified middleweight champion has a date and a location, Golovkin is yet to have someone to stand across the ring from.
Per a report from ESPN, offers were made to Steve Rolls and former middleweight world champion Hassan N’Dam for a fight set at 164 pounds, four above the middleweight title limit.
Golovkin inked a six-fight deal with DAZN that will see him make over $100 million dollars in the three year life of the contract in March. Golovkin’s first fight was slated for June 8th or June 15th, but due to Tyson Fury setting his fight against Tom Schwarz on June 15th, Golovkin decided to debut the week prior and follow Anthony Joshua’s Madison Square Garden debut on June 1st.
Golovkin and Joshua’s respective fights mark the first time in over two decades that Madison Square Garden would host back-to-back boxing cards in the venue’s main arena.
GGG was set to face Brandon Adams on that date, but the winner of the reboot season of “The Contender” would instead face off against WBC interim middleweight champion Jermall Charlo instead later this year.
If Golovkin faces Rolls, he will be the biggest challenge of the undefeated fighter’s career, while N’Dam has had his fair share of world title clashes, splitting a series with Ryota Murata in 2017.
