Golovkin-Jacobs Possible for MSG
Frustrating negotiations stalled Gennady Golovkin’s middleweight title fight with Danny Jacobs, resulting in the fight being scratched from the 2016 schedule. Now that talks appear to be moving forward, the fight could take place at Madison Square Garden in March.
The LA Times is reporting that the Golovkin and Jacobs teams have been in discussion over the past week and will meet soon to solidify a deal.
Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler has remained quiet about details surrounding the fight, a March 18 HBO event at Madison Square Garden is repeatedly being targeted.
Golovkin (36-0, 33 KOs) last beat former welterweight Kell Brook in September, on the same weekend that Jacobs (32-1, 29 KOs) dispatched of Sergio Mora in an unnecessary rematch.
The fight between GGG and Jacobs was ordered for Dec. 10 in an HBO event, but stalling negotiations forced the fight to be pushed to 2017.
A rematch between super-flyweight titlist and #1 pound-for-pound boxer Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez and former champ Carlos Cuadras is being put together as the co-main event to GGG-Jacobs. The first fight between Chocolatito and Cuadras took place on Sept. 10, the same day Golovkin beat Brook, and is one of the top picks for Fight of the Year.
