Golovkin: No Pressure in Canelo Fight
IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion, Gennady Golovkin defends his four championships against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez on September 16th in Las Vegas, in what is the most anticipated fight on the boxing calendar heading into the fall.
At his open workout on Monday, Golovkin told a group of reporters…
“It’s the biggest fight, it’s the biggest fight of my career. ‘Canelo’, he’s the biggest champion from Mexico, biggest name, pay-per-view, it’s very interesting.”
Golovkin’s trainer, Abel Sanchez, when also asked about the pressure would say
“What pressure?? He’s sold out seven arenas in a row. So fans have been there, they’ve supported him. It’s just another fight, it’s just another opponent in front of us. (Daniel) Jacobs, (Curtis) Stevens, (David) Lemieux, all those were big fights. ‘Canelo’ is just another fighter, nothing special.”
While Golovkin has certainly been an attraction in his own right and been involved in sizable events, this upcoming bout could be considered something at a different level.
“It’s the biggest financial fight, let’s put it that way.”
“There’s still going to be 20-some thousand in the arena and it’s just a fight, two guys in the middle of the ring going at each other. ‘Canelo’, we sparred with him, ‘Canelo’ knows Golovkin. We’re just coming to fight. If he comes to fight we’re all going to be treated to a great fight but it’s just another fight for us.”
