Golovkin vs. Jacobs On for March
A bout between Daniel Jacobs and unified middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has officially been signed on for March 18, 2017, and will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
This may possibly be one of — if not the — biggest challenge of the undefeated Golovkin’s career. The two had attempted to fight on Dec. 10, but negotiations fell through and the fight was not able to be scheduled for that date. Both fighters scored knockout wins in September, with Jacobs defeating Sergio Mora on a Premier Boxing Champions broadcast, while Golovkin defeated Kell Brook for his 23rd straight knockout.
Jacobs will enter this bout with just one loss to his record, which occurred in July 2010. Since then, however, Jacobs has won 12 straight. This streak includes his WBA middleweight title win on Aug. 9, 2014, in Brooklyn, New York. After four defenses of his title, Jacobs will now look to add the WBA super, WBC, IBF and IBO middleweight championships to his resume by challenging Golovkin.
While details of the fight’s negotiations were not revealed, ESPN reports that Jacobs will get more than 25 percent of the purse, and the fight will stay with HBO, which Golovkin has an exclusive contract with.
