Gennady Golovkin Was Granted Permission By WBA To Move Up In Weight To Fight Canelo Alvarez
Gennady Golovkin received special permission to move up in weight in order to face undisputed super middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on September 17 in Las Vegas.
The Kazakh is the middleweight champion. He went to the World Boxing Association (WBA) championships committee.
“GGG” earned the title last April 9 by winning a unification fight with Ryota Murata. He will now complete one of the most important trilogies in all of boxing in recent years against Alvarez.
The Committee decided to approve Golovkin’s request. If he wins the fight against “Canelo”, he will have until September 23, five days after the fight, to inform which title he wishes to keep and defend. If his choice is the middleweight title, he will have 120 days to face Erislandy Lara in a mandatory fight.
If he loses to “Canelo”, he will have the same deadline to defend his middleweight title against the Cuban.
