Gomez Confirms Loma-Linares Negotiations
It seems that negotiations have opened between Top Rank and Golden Boy for fight between WBA lightweight champion Jorge Linares and current WBO super featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko, who will jump up to 135 pounds.
And while the two sides are attempting to make the fight happen, Bob Arum has his eyes set on a May 12th date on ESPN, but Eric Gomez, President of Golden Boy Promotions, told Boxing Scene, that May 12th would be a no go.
May is a big month for not only television “sweeps” week, but also as Arum explained to Boxing Scene, ESPN wants Lomachenko to fight on May 12th because of another major sporting event, the NBA Playoffs.
Gomez in his talk with Boxing Scene, stated that he spoke with Top Rank Officials and claim that date is a no-go, stating.
“The first thing I asked him was, ‘What’s the date you guys are contemplating’ and he said, ‘May 12th’. I said, ‘That’s not going to work. We’ll fight any other date – except May 12th. We already have plans for May 12th.'”
With May 12th being a week after Canelo Alvarez’ rematch against Gennady Golovkin, there may be a replay of the fight on May 12th, but Gomez made it clear he’d be amenable to another date in May.
“I would love to do the fight direct, I would love to do the fight in late May or June. I don’t know what dates they have but late May or June we’re open to. But going into the summer, look, Linares wants to fight Mikey Garcia, too. So if Mikey comes to the plate we have to consider him.”
