White: Gonzalez Fight is Back On (UPDATE)
UPDATE: UFC President Dana White announced that the fight is back on, per Mike Bohn.
The UFC has seen some strange things happen in their dealings with the New York State Athletic Commission since the state was legalized in New York last year. Today featured perhaps the strangest yet: Strawweight Pearl Gonzalez was pulled from her UFC 210 main card fight because of her breast implants.
Gonzalez had already weighed in during the early morning weigh-ins, as had her opponent Cynthia Calvillo. Following the weigh-ins, it was reported first by Ariel Helwani that the commission was cancelling the fight after learning that Gonzalez had breast implants.
The NYSAC rule regarding this issue comes from their rulebook that was referring to women’s boxing and had been written before MMA was even legalized in the state. The rule reads:
“BREAST IMPLANTS: Due to the concern over rupture, boxers who have breast implants are not eligible to box in New York. Boxers who have had breast reduction surgeries are eligible to box.”
It is unclear why Gonzalez was not informed of this rule prior to fight week, as she was forced to go through her training camp and cut weight only to learn the day before the fight that she was ineligible.
Both Gonzalez and Calvillo’s camps are attempting to have the commission’s ruling overturned so the fight can go forward but so far no updates have come out from Buffalo.
