GSP Claims He Was “Approached” by WWE

Legendary former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St Pierre says he was approached about, and might even consider, a run with the WWE.

During a French-language interview with TVA Sports, GSP said that while attending the ESPY Awards this past year, the WWE “approached” him about possibly working with the promotion. GSP, a former two-time UFC welterweight champion and who won the middleweight title in his final fight, says he does not want to switch to professional wrestling full-time but may do a special appearance.

“I was at an ESPN event in the United States, the awards ceremony, and I got approached by the WWE,” he said. “I had just retired, and, it’s a form of competition, but of course, it’s also scripted, so I don’t know if I’d be willing to relive that. Perhaps for a special event, so I could taste it. But I don’t know if I’d want to sign a contract and do it every week and making it a living. Maybe for a special appearance.

“Perhaps we will get back to them on that, I don’t know, but for the moment, there are no discussions at all. They wanted to contact my agents, I gave them their number, but I don’t want to switch to wrestling full-time.”

The WWE lists former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar as one of its biggest stars and featured Ronda Rousey as its Raw women’s champion between August and April. Rousey was one of three women in a “triple threat” match that was the first women’s main event in the history of WrestleMania, the WWE’s biggest event.

Several UFC Hall of Famers have had a go in the pro wrestling world, most notably Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn. Others include Tito Ortiz, Don Frye, Kazushi Sakuraba, Stephan Bonnar and Frank Trigg. Former UFC heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez will also make his pro wrestling debut later this summer.

Conversely, several members of WWE’s roster have some experience in MMA, including former Bellator heavyweight Bobby Lashley, UFC veteran Matt Riddle, Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir. Jack Gallagher has also been recently approached by Bellator about competing for them in the U.K.
