GSP Heaps Praise On Khabib Nurmagomedov Following Retirement

Georges St-Pierre has massive praise for Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov was in action this past Saturday night, October 24. He took on Justin Gaethje in a lightweight title unification bout. Going into the fight, “The Eagle” was the main 155-pound champion, while Gaethje held the interim gold.

Nurmagomedov ended up scoring the second-round submission victory over Gaethje. “The Eagle” locked up a triangle choke. While Gaethje tapped, referee Jason Herzog missed it. This led to Gaethje passing out before the fight was stopped.

After the fight, Nurmagomedov took his gloves off. “The Eagle” announced his retirement, saying he made a promise to his mother that he wouldn’t fight again without his father. Nurmagomedov’s father passed away earlier this year. Nurmagomedov ends his pro MMA career with a record of 29-0.

St-Pierre hopped on his Twitter account to congratulate Nurmagomedov on a stellar career in combat sports.

“Congratulations to Khabib Nurmagomedov for his amazing performance last night and a career as perfect as you can get as an athlete!”

St-Pierre had wanted to share the Octagon with Nurmagomedov. Both sides expressed interest in the bout but UFC President Dana White was against the idea. White cited the GSP going back on his word after capturing the UFC Middleweight Championship back in late 2017.

Over time, White appeared to be more open to booking the fight. The UFC boss said that he was willing to attempt to make the bout happen for Khabib’s final fight. Unless “The Eagle” changes his mind, the fight will forever be a pipe dream.
