Gustafsson-Volkan Confirmed For UFC 227

Days after Volkan Oezdemir was pulled from his UFC Hamburg fight against Mauricio Rua, it was confirmed that he would be squaring off against Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 227 on August 4th.

With Oezdemir’s legal troubles regarding a 2017 bar fight causing his passport to be held, Oezdemir may not have been able to leave the country anyway to fight Rua on July 22nd.

Oezdemir returns to the Octagon for his first fight since losing to Daniel Cormier at UFC 220 in January, but was undefeated in his first thre UFC fights.

“Alex is extremely hungry and excited to return to the Octagon,” said Gustaffson’s manager Nima Safapour in a statement to MMA Fighting. “This is a championship-level fight. If ‘D.C.’ comes back, the winner of this fight will face him.

“If not, you have the No. 1 and 2 fighting on August 4th. The focus is 100 percent on the belt. The fans win, and ‘The Mauler’ is coming to the Staples Center.”
