Gutknecht in Coma After Brain Surgery
Gutknecht (30-5-1, 13 KO), who turns thirty-five in four months, showed little against Groves in their fight, and did not appear to show signs of head trauma until afterwards and appeared lucid during the scorecards. His condition worsened in the dressing room, at which point he was hauled out via ambulance. Eduard apparently collapsed in the dressing room after the bout and was rushed to the hospital where he underwent brain surgery and was then placed in an artificial coma to help aid in recovery.
Gutknecht showed resilience in his fight against Groves and even had his moments in the fight, dropping Groves early in the bout but it was not ruled a knockdown. Groves then seemed to settle in and won a unanimous decision over Gutknecht, the judge’s scorecards reading 119-110, 119-109 and 119-109.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Eduard and his family.
