Hakuho continues to set the pace at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament

That make’s a dozen.

Mongolian yokozuna Hakuho, who is in the hunt for his record-extending 36th title, defeated local favorite and Fukuoka-born Kotoshogiku to improve his record to 12-0 at the Kyushu Basho.

Yokozuna Harumafuji also won on Thursday, and remains one win back of his fellow Mongolian. Harumafuji made quick work of ozeki Goeido, the smallest wrestler in the makuuchi division, to keep pace.

Another native son, Shohozan, continued his fine form and kept himself in the title conversation with the two yokozuna by defeating Kyokushuho to move his record to an impressive 10-2.

Yokozuna Kakuryu also won, defeating Kisenosato in a quick match.

There were many doubts surrounding both yokozuna coming into the basho as they both were coming off of injuries. The two Mongolian champions have answered their critics in full voice with scintillating performances at Fukuoka Kokusai Center.
