Hakuho still in driver’s seat at Kyushu Basho

Hakuho continued his romp at Fukuoka Kokusai Center by soundly defeating Tochiozan on Tuesday. The Mongolian yokozuna kept hold of sole possession of first place at the Kyushu Basho, but there is still work to do as fellow Mongolian yokozuna Harumafuji is right behind him at 9-1.

There were many doubts surrounding the Mongolian champion coming into the tournament after he had to withdraw from the Autumn meet with a knee injury — he’s answered his critics.

Harumafuji, who is also coming off an injury, made quick work of local favorite Kotoshogiku by grabbing hold of the ozeki’s mawashi and sending him to a third loss with an overarm throw.

Yokozuna Kakuryu, who won the Autumn basho, did not have the same luck as his fellow grand champions. He fell four wins off the pace after being upset by Goeido, who looks to have a good chance at retaining his ozeki rank.

There are five days left in the 15-day tournament.
