Hakuho still on top at the Kyushu Basho
Mongolian yokozuna Hakuho continued his roll at the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament on Monday with a win over ozeki Goeido (5-4). The result improves his record to a stunning 9-0 mark.
The Mongolian champion was in control for the entire match against the demotion-threatened ozeki, outpacing him with his movement and dictating the match with his strength.
Even with his fantastic form, there are four wrestlers right on Hakuho’s heels with 8-1 records at the Fukuoka Kokusai Center. Yokozuna Harumafuji stayed within striking distance of his fellow countryman with a over maegashira Ikioi (6-3) in the day’s final bout. It wasn’t an easy win for Harumafuji but he was able to hang in long enough to collect the win.
Kisenosato also improved his record to 8-1 by staying in the fight after taking a slap to the face from Terunofuki (4-5).
Local favorite Kotoshogiku (7-2) was upset by the previously winless Okinoumi (1-8) to fall off the pace. Yokozuna Kakuryu also suffered a bad loss and seems all but out of the title race after losing his match against Tochiozan.
