Haney Agrees To Meet Shakur’s Weight Demand

After rejecting WBO junior welterweight champion Shakur Stevenson’s (25-0, 11 KOs) proposal to meet in a 144-pound catchweight bout, WBO welterweight champion Devin Haney (33-0, 25 KOs) has now indicated he is in fact willing to move down in weight to face Shakur.

“If I come to 144.. we have a fight?” Haney asked.

“Yes,” Stevenson replied

Stevenson had already made his case publicly before the exchange, pointing to the precedent set by Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez, who met in a 152-pound catchweight bout. Haney did face Jose Ramirez at a 144-pound catchweight in May 2025 (coming in at 143 pounds on the scales) and won by a wide unanimous decision, making the proposed limit far from unfamiliar territory for him.

Haney’s change of heart, possibly stemming from the inability to secure another high-profile opponent, clears up one major hurdle in negotiations between him and Shakur, but time will tell if the two can come to an agreement on the other hurdle, the money.
