Has Sergiy Derevyanchenko Made His Choice For His Next Fight?

After a few weeks to think it over, it appears that Sergiy Derevyanchenko has decided who he will be facing next.

According to Mike Coppinger of The Athletic, Derevyanchenko is in the process of competing against WBC Middleweight Champion Jermall Charlo. As far as when a bout would take place, a date in either September or October is being looked into.

Charlo (30-0) was one of two opponents that Derevyanchenko (13-2) had the option of facing. Another option was Canelo Alvarez, who is looking to compete sometime in September. According to The Athletic, the asking price that Derevyanchenko’s team was looking for was never met by Canelo.

Following a twelve-fight win streak, Derevyanchenko impressed against Daniel Jacobs in October 2018 inside Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater. Fighting for the IBF Middleweight Title, Jacobs ended up with a split decision win. Following a rebound fight, Derevyanchenko faced Gennadiy Golovkin last October for the IBF and IBO Middleweight Titles. In another fight where it looked like Derevyanchenko was about to pull off the win, Golovkin ended up winning via unanimous decision.

Charlo made his professional debut in 2008. A former IBF-Junior-Middleweight Champion, Charlo won the interim WBC Middleweight Title against Hugo Centeno Jr. He became undisputed champion after Canelo was promoted to “franchise” champion. The 30-year-old’s last fight was in December, beating Dennis Hogan via TKO.

The WBC Middleweight Champion also had an interest in facing Canelo. Wanting to face the best fighters out there, he was considering fighting Derevyanchenko at one point.

Coppinger went on to say that the fight would be headlining a Premier Boxing Champions card, but it is unknown which network (Showtime or FOX) will produce the fight.
