Hearn Blames PBC For The Big Fights Not Happening After Canelo’s Departure

Eddie Hearn criticized PBC after Canelo Alvarez’s departure from the promotional company.

The Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion cut short his three-fight deal with two bouts still to go. Reports indicate PBC refused to give Alvarez a $35 million guarantee to fight Jermall Charlo, reserving that for a Jaime Munguia fight only. Dan Rafael reported to the contrary, saying the Charlo guarantee was only if Canelo faced David Benavidez afterwards. Canelo decided to part ways, leaving him favorite to rejoin Matchroom Boxing and DAZN. Hearn blamed PBC’s refusal to work with other promoters for why big fights cannot get made.

“PBC don’t want to work with anyone and now they’re f***ed. So you get to a situation where if I reached out to Benavidez, what the PBC do is go ‘we’re only making that fight on the PBC.’..and this is what people don’t understand; they’re not willing to let their guys go on another platform to take a chance to achieve greatness, it all has to happen with them only,” Hearn said

The narrative around Canelo’s departure was a refusal to fight David Benavidez. The Mexican Monster’s team revealed they agreed to a $5 million fee to face Alvarez, which was the minimum, only for Canelo to back down. Eddie Reynoso responded, saying there was never an official offer to fight Benavidez. Since Benavidez is still with PBC, he may have to leave the promotional outfit to face Canelo. Hearn was open to making the fight.

“If Benavidez wants to come and talk to us and make that fight, we can talk to him and make that fight no problem. But if (Canelo’s) leaving the PBC because they haven’t delivered on what was planned, you can’t just expect him to hang around and wait on them.

“So Munguia, I think, is the fight for May. Listen, if Berlanga happens in September, great, maybe he gets another big win in the meantime. If Benavidez wants to fight in September, Saul will fight all of them, he just wants to be active,” Hearn added
