Hearn: Joshua’s Next Fight is Likely Klitschko Rematch
Anthony Joshua’s win over Wladimir Klitschko was not just a crowning moment for the British champion, but it was also one of the best heavyweight title fights in recent years. Given the rematch clause in the contract for the fight, many are anticipating a second fight between Joshua and Klitschko later this year.
The main deciding factor is whether or not Klitschko will choose to fight Joshua again or retire. The former champion is expected to make his decision soon, and Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn expects that the two heavyweights will fight again.
In an interview with SecondsOut, Hearn said that the rematch has not been confirmed yet but it most likely will be in the coming weeks.
"The next step for Anthony Joshua will probably be [formally] announced in the next three or four weeks and it’s likely to be Wladimir Klitschko," Hearn said.
Even though Joshua finished Klitschko in the eleventh round of their fight, the Brit was in trouble more than once in the contest, getting dropped to the canvas with a hard punch in the sixth round. Hearn said that Klitschko’s solid performance is proof that a rematch could yield similarly explosive results.
"Joshua looked like he was gone [beaten] in the fifth round and he may not have even gotten up in the sixth round.
"I think Wladimir will be thinking ‘I should have jumped on him.’ It was incredible from Klitschko and one of the best performances of his career."
