Hearn Outlines Plans for Haney Based on Loma-Campbell

Devin Haney will be hoping for an upset when Vasyl Lomachenko and Luke Campbell meet on Aug. 31, as it will present the quicker path towards Haney getting a title shot.

During a conference call to promote Haney’s next bout — which comes on Sept. 13 against Zaur Abdullaev — Eddie Hearn said if Campbell defeats Lomachenko and Haney gets by Abdullaev, then he promises Haney will get the first crack at Campbell.

Lomachenko’s WBA and WBO lightweight titles will be on the line in the August bout, as will be the vacant WBC lightweight title.

Hearn adds that even if Lomachenko defeats Campbell, they can at least put some pressure on Lomachenko’s team at Top Rank and the boxing organizations.

“The reason that we take this fight, even though there is a little bit of uncertainty, as to when [Haney] would get that world title shot, I think the pressure that you can apply publicly, politically, to say, ‘Look, we’ve won the eliminator. We want the winner of Lomachenko-Campbell,'” Hearn explained. “I mean, if all goes well, our guy, Luke Campbell, will beat Lomachenko and he’ll fight Devin Haney in December. That’s a dream scenario for us.

“You know, obviously Lomachenko’s the favorite in that fight, and if Lomachenko was to win, we will get the megaphone out and we will make sure that the whole America demands to see that fight. That’s how you get fights made.”

Adding to the difficulty of Haney getting a shot at Lomachenko is the plans Top Rank and its CEO, Bob Arum, have for the current pound-for-pound great and the lightweight division. If Lomachenko defeats Campbell and IBF lightweight champ Richard Commey retains against mandatory challenger Teofimo Lopez, then he is expected to book a Lomachenko-Commey undisputed title fight for early 2020.

Even if Lopez defeats Commey, Lomachenko fighting an undisputed title fight with Lopez is very well still possible.

At the very least, for Haney’s sake, a title fight with Campbell would be easier to make as both of them are promoted by Hearn.

“I believe that Devin Haney’s profile is rising and rising, and people are gonna watch him time and time again,” Hearn said. “And if he can beat Abdullaev, the world is gonna wanna see Devin Haney fight the winner of Luke Campbell and Lomachenko. They’re not gonna wanna see Teofimo Lopez-Richard Commey. They’re not gonna wanna see the winner of that fight fight the winner of that fight. They’re gonna wanna watch Devin Haney box the winner of that fight.

“it’s our job to make sure that we apply the pressure. But it’s not looking past Abdullaev, because it’s a tough, tough fight. But also knowing that we must get that 135-pound world title shot within the next six months.
