Hearn: Smith Wants GGG For First Title Defense
Following his win in the World Boxing Super Series final against George Groves, Callum Smith is looking to make a mark in the first defense of his WBA ‘Super’ and Ring Magazine super-middleweight titles.
According to Smith’s promoter Eddie Hearn, Smith is dead set on facing Gennady Golovkin in 2019 in his hometown of Liverpool.
In what would be the first fight for Golovkin since his loss to Canelo Alvarez in September, the former unified middleweight champion has had initial contact with Hearn for a showdown in May at the home of Liverpool FC, the 54,000 seated Anfield.
While Golovkin’s next step is shrouded in mystery, Hearn has been pushing for Golovkin to make the jump to the DAZN platform, and with Canelo Alvarez already signed and fighting at super middleweight on December 15th against Rocky Fielding, a potential fight against Smith could set up a trilogy fight between Golovkin and Alvarez in September of next year.
