Hearn Targeting Mikey Garcia for DAZN
Thanks to the partnership between Matchroom Boxing and DAZN, promoter Eddie Hearn has been able to bring plenty of boxing’s biggest stars to the streaming platform — and he hopes to add another in former four-weight division world champion Mikey Garcia.
Over the past year or so since DAZN has made its way into the combat sports scene, the platform has hosted some of boxing’s biggest names including Canelo Alvarez, Gennadiy Golovkin and Anthony Joshua. At the GGG-Derevyanchenko press conference, Hearn said despite the success, however, he has learned some hard lessons in dealing with promoting in the U.S. and other promoters.
“I was probably a little naive thinking that the other promoters and networks would roll over and succumb to the offers I made,” Hearn said. “They stepped up as well. It was a little more difficult than I thought it would be, but we still are spending…I haven’t spent it all. I got a lot of spare cash from the budget. We’ve been a little reckless. We had to make an impact on the market. But now we got the fighters, now we got the subscribers and the platform.
“It’s a lot easier to go to fighters. Deals that were offered to fighters are no longer on the table. We have to be smarter. We have to see who’s delivering, we have to see who’s putting bums in the seats and who’s driving subscribers. Now we have to look at that more closely. Fighters with contracts coming up, we have to look at them. We have to keep delivering on subscriber numbers.”
That all being said, Hearn is still pushing to get as many of boxing’s best names to come to the platform and his Matchroom Boxing USA promotion — Garcia is one of those names.
Garcia is a highly-touted and pursued talent in the boxing world, with UFC President Dana White even previously teasing signing him for his upcoming ZUFFA Boxing brand. Garcia has been with Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions and last competed in March, losing a one-sided decision to IBF welterweight champ Errol Spence Jr., marking the first loss of Garcia’s pro career.
Garcia’s brother and trainer, Robert Garcia, recently informed Boxing Scene that Mikey Garcia has received a “lucrative” offer from Hearn to join Matchroom.
“A year ago I spoke with Mikey Garcia,” Hearn said. “He looked at me like I was mad. He didn’t know who I was and what DAZN was…and I said to him in one year, I said give me one year and let’s talk.
It’s been 10 months and look what’s going on. It’s not just Mikey Garcia. It’s 5 or 6 other guys looking to jump ship to DAZN.
