Hearn: Wilder or Povetkin Next for Joshua

Eddie Hearn, promoter to WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua, confirmed that Joshua’s next bout will “very likely” be against WBC Champion Deontay Wilder or WBA Intercontinental and WBO International Heavyweight Champion Alexander Povetkin.

As reported by Boxing Scene, Joshua called out Wilder following his title win last week, telling Wilder to come to the U.K. for a title unification match. However, this anticipated bout may have to take a pause, as the WBA has ordered Joshua to face Povetkin.

It seems the only way Joshua can face Wilder and keep the WBA Title is if Povetkin agrees to another fight later this year.

“The WBA called the mandatory yesterday for AJ to face Povetkin next,” Hearn said. “We have a 30-day window to negotiate — at this stage it means it’s very likely Anthony’s next fight will be between Wilder or Povetkin.”

Povetkin defeated David Price via KO on the undercard of Joshua-Parker last week. Povetkin, at 35-1, has made quite the comeback since failing two drug tests in 2016.
