Heavyweight Contender Rivas Signs With Top Rank
Bob Arum continues to grow Top Rank’s heavyweight division as an influx of talent want to fight on ESPN programming. Add Oscar Rivas to the list. A NABF Heavyweight Champion, it was announced that Rivas has been signed to a multi-fight promotional agreement with Top Rank.
“Top Rank is in the heavyweight business, and we are pleased to be partnering with Yvon Michel to help Oscar get to the next level,” said Top Rank chairman Bob Arum. “He fits right in the heavyweight picture and has the skills and toughness to compete against anyone in the division.”
“I am very proud and excited to join forces with Top Rank. I thank Top Rank for believing in me,” Rivas stated. “I also want to thank my manager, Stéphane Lepine, and my promoter, Yvon Michel, for their leadership and guidance from the beginning of my career.
Rivas (26-1) has become one of the top contenders in boxing’s heavyweight division since debuting in 2009. With 18 wins via knockout, Rivas has been collecting gold and wins against contenders. His last win was via TKO against Bryant Jennings in January 2019. He then lost a bout for the WBC interim Heavyweight Championship against Dillian Whyte back in July inside the O2 Arena.
Whyte was knocked down by Rivas in the ninth round, but the former held on. Prior to the fight, Whyte tested positive for a banned substance, which Rivas and his team did not know about. Rivas is hoping for a rematch in the future.
“I am still a bit bitter over the circumstances surrounding my last fight in London against Dillian Whyte, and I hope that one day we will fight a rematch on an even playing field,” Rivas went on to say. “As for Dillian, I know he will do all he can to avoid this, but nothing will ever stop me from becoming a world champion. I am ready to take on any challenge.”
The fight against Whyte was carried on DAZN and Sky Sports. Now he will fight for a Top Rank promotion that includes recently-signed Jarrell Miller, Kubrat Pulev and lineal champion Tyson Fury. A set opponent and date for his ESPN debut has not been announced yet.
