Here’s How Valentina Shevchenko Could Face Amanda Nunes Again
Valentina Shevchenko keeps an eye on the controversy between Amanda Nunes and Julianna Pena.
The flyweight champion has no direct stake in the fight or the rematch at UFC 269, but it may pique her interest in a roundabout way.
Shevchenko has a history with Nunes. The two faced off twice, with Nunes emerging victorious on both occasions.
Despite the fact that Shevchenko is currently at flyweight, the third match between these two have been discussed. Nunes’ loss of the belt, though, has put a halt to those talks.
“I think Amanda will definitely want to take revenge next. There will be another fight [between Amanda and Julianna] again because it’s obvious,” she told SunSport.
“If she prepares for the rematch, does everything right then she will probably regain her belt and it’ll be another reason why I have to move up to bantamweight for our trilogy.”
A possible third match between Nunes and Shevchenko was the most intriguing matchup the UFC could produce in both divisions for a while.
Both had been dominating in their respective championship campaigns that it seemed unavoidable. However, it was up to Shevchenko to make the weight gain because Nunes was unlikely to drop and was unwilling to do so.
Shevchenko confessed that she was undersized at bantamweight and was relieved when the 125-pound class was created. When the UFC began allowing champions to wield two belts at once, it may have paved the way for the trilogy.
But first, Nunes must reclaim her bantamweight title.
