Hernandez-Makhachev Reportedly Set For UFC 249
Two surging lightweights will face the ultimate test when they face off against one another in Brooklyn. MMAJunkie were the first to report that UFC 249 will see Alexander Hernandez take on Islam Makhachev.
At 27, Alexander “The Great” Hernandez has proven himself to be a hot commodity. He has also proven to be a sparkplug when it comes to the mic. Hernandez (11-2) is on a one-fight win streak, beating Francisco Trinaldo back in June via unanimous decision. It was a huge rebound as he lost to Donald Cerrone in January of that year (2019) via TKO. It was a battle of old school v. new school that the latter lost.
Hernandez faces someone who is 7-1 in eight UFC fights in Islam Makhachev. The 28-year-old Makhachev (18-1) is on a six-fight win streak dating back to 2016. His last fight was a unanimous decision win over Davi Ramos back at UFC 242 in September.
This fight is something Makhachev has requested many times (a worthy opponent), with only Hernandez answering the challenge.
UFC 249 takes place inside the Barclays Center on April 18. The main event of the bout will be Khabib Nurmagomedov, Makhachev’s training partner, defending his UFC Lightweight Championship against Tony Ferguson.
