’He’s a confident kid’: Jermell Charlo on his opponent Juan Montiel

Unified Light Middleweight World Champion Jermell Charlo (34-1) is ready to put on a show against Juan Macias Montiel (22-4-2) who he believes is “a confident kid”.

Speaking SB Nation Radio host Jake Asman, Charlo said that it’s a dream come true for him to fight in front of a packed house at the Toyota Center in Houston on June 19th.  While he hailed his next opponent who shares the same number of knockout wins (22) as him, Charlo said he would not cut Montiel any slack.

“It’s going to be an amazing night of boxing. Bring Showtime to the city. It’s definitely a statement to be made on June 19th. Montiel can’t make any mistakes… I’ve faced much stiffer competition than he has. He’s a confident kid, and I understand why he’s fighting for my belt.”

The 31-year-old boxing champ added: “Y’all stay tuned. Get your popcorn before the fight. He’s coming to bang. I want to see how long he stays in the blender. I don’t care.”

Charlo aims to KO Montiel instead of going the distance with him. He feels that putting a stop to the contest early on will pave his way to fight Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez next.

“This is one of those fights where I got to take my time and be as sharp as I can be. Sure, I want to make a statement in this fight,” he added.
